It's not only the ugly atmosphere and the attacks by the cyber gang that are the pits, it's the gawd awful advice dished out to authors. Have you noticed all the rah rah threads when someone says they have an agent, yet a self published author who has sold thousands of books is likely to be banned. The reality is that even if you land a top agent, you still only have a 50 percent chance of being published. And if you are published, an even slimmer chance of having a best seller. Most authors never earn a cent over their advance, and more and more publishers are not even giving advances anymore. With the state of the publishing industry today, an unknown writer is facing lottery odds in going that route. Self publishing is the only viable alternative.
AW is a very elitist sort of place. You're not really an author unless you've gone the agent route and been published by one of the biggies. They just haven't moved with the times at all.
I find Uncle Jim fair but he's the exception to the rule. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have been published. I'm not defending the rest of them or AW in general but Uncle Jim helped my writing and writing style enormously.
Have you noticed that Uncle Jim hasn't posted anything on AW since January? I wonder if there's been a 'difference of opinion' there between him and Mac? It's fun to speculate that perhaps he's broken up with Debra Doyle aka the Old Hack, as well.
Man but they;re ugly.

ReplyDeleteAmen to that, Don. The advice dished out at AW is about 10 - 15 years out of date.
